We are proud to share that the Kisner Foundation and Friends Center for Pediatric Development, Behavioral Health & Wellness has officially opened at Wellstar Golisano Children's Hospital of Georgia in Augusta. 2KM Architects was proud to lead the design team on this project, and seeing the ribbon cut and patients already walking through the doors means a great deal to us. The new center brings pediatric rehabilitation, occupational and physical therapy, speech therapy, developmental behavioral pediatrics, and pediatric neurosciences together in one location, with pediatric psychiatry services coming soon. As Dr. Valera Hudson, pediatrician-in-chief at Wellstar Golisano, said at the ceremony: "This is not the finish line by any stretch of the imagination." For the CHoG Expansion Competition, the proposed 5-story addition was designed to enhance both functionality and experience — housing critical care units while improving site visibility, circulation, and patient comfort. Key strategies included extending the structure over the existing drip-off to create a flexible atrium space, strengthening the buildings presence along the main approach, and improving pedestrian connectivity. The result is a concept that prioritizes efficiency, accessibility, and a more seamless patient journey. #competition #architecture #healthcare

Targeted upgrades can significantly improve both performance and experience. This Cath Lab renovation included new imaging equipment, speciality lighting, and updated finishes throughout the suite. Enhancement extended beyond the lab install to supporting spaces, while color-changing LED cove lighting was integrated to improve patient comfort during exams. Architects don’t earn licensure just for designing buildings that look good—we’re responsible for understanding the codes that protect health, safety, and welfare. In a recent meeting, we discussed how required setbacks (like a 10-foot separation from the property line) can help avoid the need for fire-rated exterior walls and windows. When applied correctly, these codes don’t just ensure safety—they can also reduce construction costs and simplify design decisions.

Several leaders shared inspiring words, including WMCGH President Ralph Turner, Pediatrics Chair Dr. Valera Hudson, Augusta University President Russell Keen, and Augusta Mayor Garnett Johnson — each highlighting the collaboration and dedication that made this project possible, from planning and funding to design and construction. A special moment of the ceremony honored Dr. Charles Howell, who played a pivotal role in the original planning and fundraising for the Children’s Hospital of Georgia. In recognition of his 40 years of service, the lobby was named in his honor, and Mayor Johnson declared October 13th as “Charles Howell Day” in the City of Augusta. We’re proud to share that the new Veterans Transitional Support Unit at the Georgia War Veterans Home has officially opened — a facility dedicated to providing comprehensive care to veterans with PTSD and other mental health needs. Georgia is now the first state in the nation to integrate skilled nursing with behavioral services in a state-operated veterans home.
